I love driving around by myself (which is a rarity these days) and listening to the radio. Yeah, sometimes it’s annoying when you keep hearing the same commercial play over and over again, but between ads, you can get yourself psyched up about the next song that’s going to hit the air waves. It’s like a sweet surprise–and it’s especially exhilarating when it’s one of your fave tunes to rock out to!
The other day, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemian’s “What I Am” came on, and it brought me back to a time when life’s pace was a tiny bit slower. A time when I played songs on repeat just so I could ponder over the lyrics and relate them to my current situation. I’ve always been a deep thinker and love to over-analyze everything. My God it’s exhausting! 😉
Anyhow, while I was listening to Edie’s dulcet tones, I was reminded of my good friend Christine. Like me, she’s free-spirited with a hippie-ish mentality, and the lyrics kind of speak to that. When the song ended, I just had to call her. I wasn’t even sure whether or not she liked this song, but I started belting it out into her cell’s voicemail. After I finished the refrain, I went on to tell her how this song got me thinking of her and how I wished that we lived closer so we could just spontaneously pop over to each others’ doorstep and have a nice chat over a glass of wine. I can’t remember what else I said because I tend to ramble, but I DO know that the message kicked Christine’s crankiness that day. She returned my call, and let me know that she heard my message exactly when she needed it most and it made her smile–which in turn made me smile. And she went on to say some funny & heartfelt things about our friendship that just made my day! It was a crankiness crusher for both of us.
Moral of the story: Don’t ignore the opportunity to tell someone how much you care about them and miss them. You may always be thinking about how much they mean to you, but it’s always nicer to express your feelings aloud. The last time I checked, most people aren’t telepathic like Sookie Stackhouse, so share your thoughts instead of just assuming that they already know. Spread the love & crush the cranky!

Tara, I can’t relate to the music you’re talking about but I learned long ago that it’s important to let someone know when you are thinking about them. It’s nice to think good thoughts but even nicer to share them so you both get to enjoy the thought!!

Tara, it is always nice to let your friends know when your thinking of them! great post! I do a thing I call writing letters in my head sounds crazy but I often think of people I care about late at nite and I write a mental letter… well I finally started writing it down on paper and now and then I send a real letter snail mail style or a card or sometimes just a call to tell them I was thinking about them. But for me writing has always been an easier way to express hence my love to blog! And who doesn’t love getting a card or letter in the time of technology…so old school..but nice!
